About the role

We are looking for a Senior Technician to lead the Biomedical Science Technical Team in providing technical support for teaching, research and outreach. This is an exciting opportunity to join our dedicated technical services team in the College of Science and Engineering.

As a Senior Technician, you will ensure the technical resources are deployed and developed to support the co-ordination, preparation and running of specialist classes for students studying Biomedical Science and Human Biology. Working closely with academic and technical teams you will be required to support a range of activities including undergraduate projects, teaching, research and outreach activities whilst promoting good practice and ensuring safety compliance.

This post will provide good opportunities to contribute to the strategic direction and evolving changes within the School of Human Sciences.

Principal accountabilities

  1. Direct supervision of technicians in Biomedical Science to ensure prioritizing and allocation of technical support work for research, taught provision, academic enterprise and outreach activities within Biomedical Science provision which is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical science (IBMS).
  2. Assist the Technical Team Leader in planning, development, management and maintenance of high-quality technical support in Biomedical Science.
  3. Act as the key point of contact between technicians in the area and the academic and research staff, referring issues to the Technical Team Leader.
  4. Principal responsibility for raising Purchase Order Requests and monitoring delivery and invoicing of goods in the area.
  5. Assist the Technical Team Leader in monitoring of budgets in the area.
  6. Deputise for the Technical Team Leader in Human Sciences as appropriate.
  7. Ensure compliance on all matters relating to health and safety including those relating to any person working, studying or visiting the areas managed.
  8. Demonstrate in student practicals and provide technical support for Under-/Post-graduate students’ Independent research projects within Biomedical Science related areas as required by the Technical Team Leader.
  9. Maintenance and upkeep of equipment and laboratories in Biomedical Science areas such as molecular biology, cellular biology, biochemistry, immunology, haematology, histopathology, oncology.
  10. Ensure that equipment inventories are regularly updated.
  11. Participate in Discipline and School, groups and committees.
  12. Engage in external professional networks and keeping up to date with knowledge and developments in the sector relevant to service planning and delivery.
  13. Undertake any other duties as required in agreement with the Technical Team Leader.

Person specification

Essential Criteria


  • Degree or higher in Biomedical Science /related scientific discipline specific to IBMS or equivalent experiential learning in a related subject


  • Demonstrable experience of providing technical support in a Biomedical Science or related scientific discipline in an HE environment
  • Demonstrable experience of working and carrying out research in a Class 2 laboratory
  • Demonstrable experience of working in cell culture, microbial culture, histopathology, immunology and molecular biology
  • Proven experience of Health and Safety management

Skills, knowledge and abilities

  • Excellent and proven verbal communication skills and able to communicate effectively to students and staff
  • Knowledge of using and maintaining equipment used in teaching and research allied to biomedical science, molecular and cellular biology
  • Manage own time/prioritise work of others in the team effectively

Desirable Criteria


  • Professional registration e.g., Registered Science Technician/Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (or willingness to work towards) or member/Fellow of IBMS
  • Portable Appliance Testing certificate
  • Health and Safety Qualification or evidence of training


  • Demonstrable experience of people management/ team leadership
  • Demonstrable experience of working in histology and oncology

Skills, knowledge and abilities

  • Significant organisational experience relating to work scheduling, lab and equipment booking
