An opportunity has arisen to provide technical support to the York Structural Biology Laboratory (YSBL) section of the Chemistry Department. The post holder will be expected to work under the direction of academics and senior technical staff to ensure safe and efficient running of several research laboratories and equipment.

Knowledge of general laboratory procedures, technical cover in the areas of IT and instrumentation management, experience of practical biological chemistry, and of working in a scientific environment are essential for the post, although specific training will be provided.

The Department of Chemistry is one of the largest and most successful departments at York and we are renowned internationally for our research. The work of YSBL focuses on the fundamental chemical bases for biological and biochemical processes, the use of small molecules to probe cellular biology, software and methods development and on the exploitation of enzymes in biocatalysis. To provide technical and scientific support to a number of chemical biology laboratories. The main role will be to 1) assist with and take day-to-day responsibility for the organisation, housekeeping and operational management of the laboratories, equipment and instrumentation, and 2) provide instrument training as and when required.  This will require the candidate to work collaboratively with the technical team, academics, and research staff to provide general and flexible support; particularly in the area of biochemistry.  Knowledge of laboratory operations, health and safety processes, and biochemistry techniques are essential to the role.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • 2 Science A Levels at grade C or above, including Chemistry and at least one other STEM subject, HNC  or equivalent experience
  • Relevant theoretical knowledge of the fundamentals of biochemistry
  • Ability to perform practical tasks to a consistently high standard with attention to detail for example biochemistry based on established procedures.
  • Ability to operate standard equipment and laboratory instrumentation
  • Dependable, reliable and self-motivated
