You will have responsibility for day-to-day co-ordination, running and maintenance of the Life Sciences laboratories and meeting rooms at Silwood Park. This post involves supporting academic and research staff in their research activity and providing a high standard of technical expertise and advice. There will be significant infrastructure investment at the campus in the near future and it would be desirable for the post-holder to have extensive project experience.

Life Sciences staff at Silwood Park is composed of 27 academic staff, 40 research and 10 support staff. There are currently approximately 130 Post graduate taught and 70 PhD students based at Silwood Park, spanning 5 Masters Courses in Ecology and Evolution.

Duties and responsibilities

Technical Support:

To manage the day to day running of the laboratories, controlled environment (CE) facilities, greenhouses and offices at Silwood Park, ensuring that use of facilities, laboratory equipment and consumables is carried out efficiently and that department equipment is maintained in a good state of repair.
Supporting the Silwood Park Masters courses by providing AV and laboratory advice and support, setting up any AV and IT equipment required.
To share the provision of on-call cover for equipment and CE room alarms on the Silwood Park Campus
Advise staff and students on the application, techniques and use of the campus facilities and laboratory equipment.
Responsibility for all maintenance and repair of Departmental equipment, reporting defects and liaising with Estates Management at Silwood Park.


Support Principal Investigators and students in the discharge of his or her health and safety responsibilities. Advise on the appropriate arrangements for managing and monitoring health and safety at Silwood Park.
Supervising, training and monitoring students and users working in the greenhouses and CE facilities. Providing safety induction training, and training in the appropriate use of the facility to all new users.
Advise on risk assessments and the controls necessary for managing the risks identified.
Advise Principal Investigators, and Departmental staff and students on day-to-day operational safety and compliance with College and statutory requirements.
Monitor procedures, including waste disposal and manual handling, for the safety of staff and students in the building and advise on safe systems of work.

Technical Administration:

To liaise with research staff, Estates Management and the Faculty Safety officers regarding equipment failure or other issues within the laboratories.
To be aware of college administrative policies and assist in advising staff regarding the college regulations.
Monitor the budget of the Silwood Park building infrastructure account making sure it operates effectively within budget constraints.

To attend relevant meetings
To be responsible for ensuring that data is accurate, up-to-date and complete

Essential requirements

Degree or equivalent vocational qualification in a relevant subject and work experience in a relevant technical role

Experience of working in a laboratory

Experience of working with greenhouses and controlled environment facilities.

Experience of working in the higher education sector

Previous technical and facilities management experience

Previous experience in teaching / training staff or students

A sound understanding of Health and Safety regulations and procedures
