The Department of Biology is looking for a Technician to provide a high-quality service to the department. The post presents an exciting opportunity to provide a technical service to teaching and research staff which underpins departmental objectives in pioneering global research, technologies and supporting teaching activities.
Role
The role holder will work as part of a team of six to provide a comprehensive stores service.Â
Typically, deliveries arrive on a pallet containing many parcels from the same company, which must be separated and processed, usually containing chemicals, plasticware, or scientific equipment. Stores also receive many perishable deliveries, materials that are highly sensitive to temperature change, packaged on dry ice. All deliveries need to be unpacked carefully, checking the items against the order, entering the details on the software system, and storing items at the correct environmental conditions, diligence is vital, many items are named with unfamiliar words.
Another main purpose of the role is to work at the counter, providing excellent customer service to our staff and students, who will be collecting deliveries, seeking advice on suppliers, or how to order a hazardous chemical, where to place laboratory waste, or assistance with gas cylinders.
The role involves lifting, moving, and sorting; boxes, waste bags, heavy gas cylinders and sometimes large equipment, with the aid of lifting equipment, it is essential that you are physically fit. The stores service is mainly paper free, it is vital that you are computer literate and able to pick up new software systems and processes.
Skills & Experience needed
- Active listening and verbal communication skills for effective interaction with all team members
- Taking an active part in a team, helping colleagues as required to ensure tasks are completed on time and to required standards
- Willingness to learn, gain knowledge and acquire the relevant IT skills
