An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Core Facilities team within Manchester Metropolitan University as a Confocal (Light microscopy) Technical Specialist.

Working in specialist laboratories, workshops, studios and IT facilities, our technical professionals play a key role in supporting, guiding and advising across our university, from sciences, art, design and technology to sports, ceramics, nursing and physiotherapy.

The Role: 

The Technical Specialist will work in the Core Facility supporting education, funded research, and commercial activities. Responsible for the delivery and future direction of Confocal Microscopy and other related microscope techniques, including the Thunder Imaging system, Fluorescent Microscopes and Live Cell Imager. You will also have experience using microscopes for a broad range of applications and an in-depth knowledge of sample preparation, image processing/data interpretation, troubleshooting, maintenance and QC. Duties will include developing partnerships with external agencies and engaging in collaborative projects. To identify and assess the service’s usefulness and lead the introduction of new techniques. Health and safety and administration will also feature in this role. 

About You: 

As a Technical Specialist, the successful candidate will be expected to have experience in Confocal and Light Microscopy and other related techniques in previous research teaching and learning environments and specialist knowledge of the running and maintenance of instrumentation relating to Confocal Microscopes, Fluorescent Microscopes and other imaging systems.

You will have a flexible approach to work and an ability to work on your initiative. You will be expected to participate in external networks and user groups, attend relevant events to keep up to date with the latest developments and techniques and share information with colleagues. Strong communication skills and commitment to the quality service provider will also be essential in succeeding in this post.
